DEMOCRATS: WE ARE OFF TOPIC. THE NEWS MEDIA WANTS TO TALK ABOUT ECONOMY BECAUSE WE’RE IDIOTS

cayzif6d.jpg

From the time I woke up this morning, to right now, all networks are talking only word: ECONOMY. They will spend all day talking about the economy. They just now said it again. THE ECONOMY, they say is our #1 concern. This is a lie. They lie to you and I. Why? Because they are bought and sold by the very people who have stolen our democracy.

HERE’S MY ADVICE TO YOU . You won’t get better advise my friend. There is only one way to end this nightmare. DISENGAGE FROM THE BS. Stop buying stuff. Effective now. Dedicate 2008 as the year you stopped buying shit. Also, I suggest to you that you sign up for the undecided column, and wait and see where we go as a party from here. Get out of Edwards column. Get out of Hillary’s column. Get out of Obama’s column. I wish we had some REAL leadership right now. But, we don’t. What we have is each other and the power of our collective wallet, voice and vote. I don’t care about the damn economy. The Power Elite have complete control of our economy. Big Oil made record profits and they are Bush’s best friends. The banks made billions of dollars in bad loans, knowing it would crash and here we are.  They control the economy. Period. If YOU want to control the economy – you can. You can stop buying their stuff.

I care about the war in Iraq, the upcoming war in Iran, our homeless vets, mandatory vaccines, the corrupt beef industry, our health freedoms, THE PATRIOT ACT, and all the things Obama, Hils and Edwards won’t talk about, except as a nice little poem. The media own these poeple, and the Global Elite own the Media, and you really don’t want to know who owns the Global Elite do you.

There is no time left. This is it. WHAT WILL YOU DO.

Please, we must join together, fearlessly and stand united. Stop buying anything that is not food or shelter and basic needs. Get rid of your big fat cars and go small. Conserve gas. Conserve electricity. Buy used clothing. I’ve been doing it for years, and I look fabulous ! Have a yard sale and sell your junk. Give that money away if you can. If not, please use it wisely. Don’t buy their stuff. If you cannot dedicate for this, then nothing else you are doing has any power.

Keep blogging about the things you care about. DON’T LET THEM TELL US WHAT MATTERS TO US.

The people in positions in power who may understand this debate, will no longer fight for people who will not fight for themselves. WHY WOULD THEY ? They will cave to the enormous pressure on them from above.

Now get going.

Romney Teams w/ Blackwater?

Blackwater and Romney Team Up

Seems Mitt Romney is intimately tied in with the leadership at Blackwater. I’ve no idea how this connection came about, but he’s taking advice on substantial issues, like counterterrorism policy, from Blackwater’s #2 man, though, of course, Blackwater stands to benefit from any action Romney might take a President. Conflict? These are Republicans.

The interesting things you learn! Wow! This article in The Nation indicates you can buy onesies for a baby with the Blackwater USA logo on it. Just visit the Blackwater company store! We just bought several gifts for baby showers, and we didn’t even know about this. Missed opportunity — wouldn’t it look stylish on a baby girl?

But I digress. It seems Mitt Romney is closely aligned with Blackwater. That same article from The Nation notes that he uses Blackwater USA’s number two man Cofer Black as his senior counterterrorism advisor.

Meanwhile, Blackwater is deep in the camp of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Cofer Black is Romney’s senior adviser on counterterrorism. At the recent CNN/YouTube debate, when Romney refused to call waterboarding torture, he said, “I’m not going to specify the specific means of what is and what is not torture so that the people that we capture will know what things we’re able to do and what things we’re not able to do. And I get that advice from Cofer Black, who is a person who was responsible for counterterrorism in the CIA for some thirty-five years.” That was an exaggeration of Black’s career at the CIA (he was there twenty-eight years and head of counterterrorism for only three), but a Romney presidency could make Blackwater’s business under Bush look like a church bake sale.

This seems a conflict of interest or something, and Romney is not just ignoring that conflict, but exploiting it. Cofer Black works in a business whose profits are intimately tied to how we conduct the “War on Terror,” thus all of his advice is a bit suspect. Sure, Cofer Black could be right in his analysis, but how would you ever know that his opinion on any issue is guided by integrity rather than by monied interest? Seems a serious judgement issue on Romney’s part, at least to me. It’s not like Blackwater has a reputation for integrity, after all.

Besides that onesie for your baby, in either pink or blue, you can buy child-sized hoodies in the Blackwater shop, and even a teddy bear. They do not offer diapers for your dog.

ROMNEY’S CHURCH EXPOSED ?

Im so with Romney on this one- and I’m no fan  of Romney.

I don’t see why people are up in arms. No, I am not anti muslim.

Read my blog for Gawds sakes !

Writer Exposes Romney’s Church of

Latter-Day Hypocrisy

This post, written by Sam Stein, originally appeared on The Huffington Post

The author of a much-discussed op-ed in the Christian Science Monitor — which charged that former Gov. Mitt Romney said he would likely not appoint a Muslim-American to his presidential cabinet – says Romney’s explanation for the comment is a flat out lie.

Mansoor Ijaz, a prominent Islamic businessman, told the Huffington Post that Romney’s comments were made in reference to possible cabinet appointments and not, as the former governor has since claimed, in the context of combating Islamic extremism.

“This guy is lying now to the American people,” said Ijaz. “He probably never imagined someone would come out and write a piece the way I did. And I think he made a serious mistake in judgment in trying to disown what he said.”

In an oped on Tuesday titled “A Muslim Belongs in the White House,” Ijaz wrote of a private campaign event he attended in which Romney claimed he could not see how appointing a Muslim to his cabinet could be “justified” considering the group’s demographics in America.

Pressed to explain his statement later in the day, Romney said it had been taken out of context.

“His question was did I need to have a Muslim in my Cabinet to be able to confront radical Jihad and would it be important to have a Muslim in my Cabinet,” said Romney. “And I said, ‘No, I don’t think that you have to have a Muslim in the Cabinet to be able to take on radical Jihad anymore than during the Second World War we needed to have a Japanese-American to understand the threat that was coming from Japan or something of that nature.’ I just rejected that argument…”

Reached by phone, Ijaz scoffed at such an interpretation of what transpired.

“I can tell you,” he said, “that Romney’s push back, meaning his statement about the Japanese is all bullshit. He never talked about the Japanese at that point. Everything he said today is simply trying to reconfigure this item, which is he doesn’t feel there is a need to put people of Islamic faith into his cabinet.”

Moreover, he added, this is not the first time the Massachusetts Republican has made off-the-cuff remarks that Muslims have found insensitive. Indeed, as reported by Talking Points Memo, Romney rejected the idea of appointing a Muslim to a high-ranking White House position at an earlier and, again, private campaign stop.

Irma Aguirre, the former finance director for the Nevada Republican Party, told the Huffington Post about her experience at a Romney fundraiser roughly two months ago:

“I was curious to listen to Romney, I was very impressed by him and I’m kind of undecided about whom to support. Well, at one point, they opened questions to the audience and a gentleman who was with me… raised his hand and posed a question. ‘Being that Muslims do not really trust America’s leaders, do you think it would be prudent, or would you consider having a Muslim in your cabinet as an adviser to lend credibility to the administration? His response was ‘probably not’ or ‘most likely not.'”

According to Aguirre, Romney pivoted from the question into a discussion on the dangers jihadism posed to America.

“I was shocked and disgusted,” she recounted. I felt like “he was assuming that all Muslims were jihadists. And later, I just kind of looked at a friend of mine who is a huge Mitt Romney supporter, she asked me, ‘Isn’t he great?’ and I said, ‘absolutely not.'”

Romney’s campaign did not respond by time of publication.

Backwards Alphabet: Jesus Christ = 666

Here’s how to do it. Using the backwards alphabet – Z=1,  Y = 2, X= 3, etc.  NOW ADD THIS PHRASE:  WHICH NUMBER REPRESENTS JESUS CHRIST.  Here’s how to add it.

Assign the right number to the right letters. Write the phrase out across a piece of paper.

Write the numbers under the letters.  Now add them across ONE DIGIT AT A TIME. Like this:

W   H   I   C  H

4    19  18  24  19

Add 1 digit at a time for a horizontal (h) read.

4 + 1 + 9 + 1 + 8  etc

Write your answer down.

Then add vertically, the way you normally would.

Now, add the h and the v together for your result.

This system is based on the CROSS NUMBER. (h and v)

Traditional numerology would have you add only vertically.

That was a great way to keep the truth from being seen.

You will find that the Backwards alphabet yeilds enormous

insight. Not only is it used, it is KEY.

Both alphabets work in tandem.  But don’t you find it interesting

that the regular alphabet does not result in:

WHICH NUMBER REPRESENTS JESUS CHRIST = 666.

There is a faction – as old as Moses and Abraham, who use

numbers – symbols and alphabets to communicate with each other.

  ADD “GOD”

The result – using the backwards alphabet is:   201223

THIS IS REALLY  2012 – 23

2012 YOU ALREADY KNOW ABOUT.

23 = BUSH  H

MORMON – using the backwards alphabet –  =

29 h  74 v  103  hv

This is the same exact string for JESUS when you use the

forward alphabet.

Schwarzenegger allows toxic aerial biochemical spraying

Governor Schwarzenegger Backs Aerial Biochemical Spraying That Harms Children

by Rami Nagel

(NewsTarget) On September 9th, 2007 several planes hired by the State of California Food and Agricultural Department (CDFA) flying at an altitude of approximately 500ft sprayed the untested biochemical, CheckMate®OLR-F, on over 30,000 citizens in Monterey and other surrounding cities in California. This occurred without the permission of the citizens. The spraying continued for three nights from approximately 8pm to 5am. About 1,500 pounds of biochemical were dumped on the cities. Many citizens did not even know what was happening when the planes were buzzing overhead.

An 11 month old child nearly died from breathing difficulties. A six year old child developed asthma as a result of the aerial spraying. Over one hundred people signed affidavits stating that they got sick from the spraying. Hundreds of people had symptoms like; shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness, burning lungs, nausea, and muscle aches.

The excuse for aerial spraying is not a deadly disease carrying mosquito, but a moth whose larva may eat some leaves of some plants; called the Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM). The CDFA considers the moth an invasive species since it is from Australia. Yet, evidence suggests that the moth has been in California for many years, living peacefully. In response to the moth, the CDFA set up relatively harmless sticky traps, which have captured nearly every Light Brown Apple Moth in the Northern California region.

Governor Schwarzenegger is a strong supporter of the declared emergency; the need to spray untested biochemicals on humans to stop the LBAM from destroying crops.

This aerial spraying violates several state, federal and international laws. It violates the right to personal safety given by the California State Constitution, the very document that creates the California government. It violates the Americans with Disabilities Act, which protects people with chemical sensitivities and other disabilities from discrimination. It violates the Federal constitutional right to personal liberty. It violates the EPA’s laws against spraying pesticides on people. It violates human rights laws that say that human experimentation without consent is unethical and immoral. It violates criminal laws that claim it is a crime to poison children, or anyone else. It violates pollution laws to spray a toxic substance over plants, animals, and waterways. It violates laws against organized crime and it violates the very tenants of our democracy; a system of government designed to represent the people, not to poison the people to represent private agri-business interests.

Recently, in a series of rapid fire events, the CDFA declared a state of emergency relating to the LBAM claiming that the moths are about to destroy a huge portion of the state’s agricultural crops. The claim is that the LBAM will cause hundreds of millions of dollars of crop damage. Due to this supposed “emergency,” the CDFA claims it must immediately spray an untested biochemical to eliminate this threat as soon as possible despite the reported harms. Mind you, these moth’s only travel within a 20-30 yard diameter of their birth place during their entire life.

The state of emergency is a false declaration because the CDFA cannot produce any meaningful evidence that the LBAM can or would destroy crops and the sticky traps are effective at containing the moths. In Hawaii, the LBAM has been a help to the ecosystem by destroying invasive species and there’s no evidence of crop harm for the last 100 years.

The only emergency seems to be that the State of California, under Governor Schwarzenegger’s helm, has an urgent need to spray as many humans; men, women, children, pregnant women, people with allergies, the elderly, and the sick, with chemicals. There is no sensible explanation as to why they want to do this, nor is there any explanation as to why they think that spraying pesticides on people is a good thing to do.

Spraying chemicals, safe or not safe, on humans against their will is illegal. It is a crime! The Nuremberg Code, established after the horrors of World War II, prohibits human experimentation without the consent of the person who is being experimented upon.

The state does not care about the over 200 health complaints, nor the laws they are violating, but rather cares about the commercial agricultural business. Trade partners with the US may not accept shipments of plants or produce that may have the LBAM. The CDFA has given various figures of the estimated crop damage that the LBAM will cause. Their estimates range from 100 million to 2.7 billion dollars. Now, these estimates are not based on any scientific survey but rather on their opinion and fears.

Even if the harmless moth could cause such damage, it is a dangerous precedent to place the health and safety of United States citizens, especially infants and children, secondary to money. So the CDFA and Governor Schwarzenegger has determined that 100 million dollars of possible damage gives them justification to poison children with chemicals. In this case, economic factors have been given priority over liberty and human value.

And the question I have been asking myself is – who is going to protect the children who will be sprayed?

So what chemicals make up Checkmate OLR-F and LBAM-F Products?

This has been the technical question many people have been asking. The specific details of the chemicals seem to be of less importance than the simple fact that these are chemicals. Synthetic chemicals do not have a place on our bodies without our permission. And they do not have a place in our children’s bodies who have a much lower tolerance to environmental toxins!

My understanding is that approximately 15-20% of the main biochemical is made up of a synthetically derived moth pheromone. This pheromone supposedly confuses the moths and disrupts their mating cycles. I am unaware of any scientific evidence to prove that the pheromone is effective at controlling the LBAM population. I supposed the CDFA’s plan is to see how it works after a year or more of spraying. This is essentially biochemical testing. And the problem is that they are doing it on the public on a large scale, against the people’s will. Due to the declaration of an emergency, the CDFA allow themselves to bypass the normal environmental review process meant to examine such questions.

The concern with the Checkmate chemicals is not so much about the pheromone, but rather the pheromone distribution system. The pheromone is encapsulated in a micro-capsule (like a miniature pill) which the CDFA brags is biodegradable. What they do not tell you is that the capsule needs to dry out to biodegrade. In water environments (like your body), the pheromone stays encapsulated. The micro-capsule takes approximately 30 days to degrade. The full degradation occurring within 30 days is unlikely because Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties experience frequent rain and dampness from the Pacific Ocean. Thus, the people in the areas that are sprayed will be inhaling and touching miniature pills. Once in their bodies, the capsule will likely slowly degrade causing moth pheromone to be released directly into people’s bloodstream.

The micro-capsule is made out of what are falsely called “inert” ingredients. Again, the EPA brags that these “inert” ingredients are mostly ionized water. However, they forget to tell you that there are also two known dangerous toxic substances in the inerts – tricaprylyl methyl ammonium chloride (TMAC) and polymethylene polyphenyl isocyanate (PPI).

The breathing problems and asthma-like conditions are known side effects of PPI. So how is the state legally able to spray it on people?

The way they illegally avoid the law and lie to people, so that people will be lulled into a stupor, is by saying that PPI, along with other ingredients, are actually not in the pesticide. Well, this is about 5% true and 95% a lie. Say you are baking a cake; you use flour, sugar, some eggs and other ingredients, and you bake it. One could argue that, in the final cake product, there is no flour but rather a new chemical compound called cake. In the same way, when PPI and other ingredients are processed, they meld and bind together and change their chemical form. They no longer resemble exactly their original substances, just like cake does not look much like the flour it was made of. When you examine the final biochemical, you will see no PPI but rather some new toxic substance.

Since there is no independently verifiable evidence that these new chemical compounds are toxic or not, other than 117 signed affidavits of people who got sick, and since there is a so-called “emergency”, no thorough testing needs to be done. It is a devious way to avoid the law. The end result is that we must “trust” the EPA to say the chemicals are safe. It’s hard to trust the EPA because, for example, with water fluoridation the entire employee’s union at the EPA came out to say that water fluoridation is dangerous and harmful while the official position of the EPA is that water fluoridation is a good thing. It also becomes more difficult to win a court case against the aerial spraying when you cannot get any evidence that the chemicals are dangerous because you are not allowed to independently verify anything that the EPA alleges.

Strangely, the CDFA came out with precautions for this “non-toxic” chemical. Recommendations such as; to close all your windows during the spray, to stay inside, to hose everything off in the morning before you touch it, and to not touch anything that is covered with the chemical residue (anything outside) were encouraged. These warnings are good ideas since the micro-capsule can easily be inhaled, stays stuck on things, or remains in the air. I recently checked the CDFA website looking to quote this document and they had removed all warnings about the chemical, claiming now that it is totally safe. Perhaps this was spurred by the CDFA Secretary of Agriculture A.G. Kawamura’s concern that citizens would waste too much water following the CDFA’s instructions to wash the chemical off of things before touching them. It is eerie how A.G. Kawamura is concerned about saving water and our environment, but is totally oblivious to the fact that hundreds of people have been poisoned due to his aerial spraying efforts.

Another concern is the Checkmate OLR-F and LBAM-F warning label from the manufacturer:

“Keep Out of Reach of Children”

“Caution: Harmful if absorbed through the skin. Causes moderate eye irritation. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, or clothing. Harmful if inhaled. Avoid breathing vapor or spray mist.” The criminals at the CDFA claim we should not worry about this warning label. According to the CDFA’s toxicity theory, since the biochemical is going to be inhaled and touched in smaller doses, this warning is no longer necessary as it refers only to those who handle the chemicals.”

Due to this premise, the CDFA insists that the 117 documented complaints of illnesses are psychosomatic and are not caused by the Checkmate. They continue to spray without thoroughly investigating these health claims. Infants cannot get psychosomatic illnesses because they are too young to make things up like that. The CDFA are hypocrites because when a doctor reports that someone is sick to the CDFA, and if that person had recently ingested certified raw milk, they automatically shut down the milk business even without evidence that the milk caused the illness. (The milk, in this case, is never the source of illness because the cows are healthy.) On one hand, they overly penalize raw milk producers for things that might cause illness and on the other hand they ignore cases which definitely cause illness by their own hands.

Spraying chemicals on people is a crime, safe or not.

This is an outrage and this is sickening.

It used to be easy to turn a blind eye to government corruption because we could avoid it. You can avoid vaccinations by claiming an exemption. You can avoid polluted soaps and shampoos by buying natural ones, and you can avoid pesticide ridden foods by choosing organic. (In case you are wondering, strawberries and other produce sprayed with Checkmate will still be certified organic by the State, so you won’t know you are eating pesticide ridden produce.) But the citizens of Monterey, Santa Cruz, Seaside, Los Lomas and other communities consisting of over 100,000 people who are scheduled to be spray bombed, some beginning today for up to six nights in a row, do not have the choice. Their personal boundaries have been violently violated by the CDFA.

Now, you cannot turn a blind eye anymore to what the government does. We need to acknowledge that these things are wrong, whether we can avoid them or not. When we do not stand up against evil, we affirm it. When we say what is happening is smart, we affirm that the evil doer is good because we do nothing to stop them.

I encourage you, in every way possible, to not sit back here. When you see someone doing wrong, whether it is a relative, a neighbor, or the local government, speak up. We need to stop this juggernaut. It is truly a terrifying experience because I have a pregnant partner and a young child and I have to move away from here to avoid being sprayed, to avoid being force vaccinated with synthetic moth hormone. The last bastion of hope is that the Santa Cruz City Council narrowly voted to sue the criminals doing this. It is unclear whether their lawsuit will be effective.

Checkmate.

The name for the biochemical Checkmate has two meanings. First, to check (stop) mating. Although there is no reliable evidence that it will check mating, for all we know, it could cause the moths to mutate and mate more. The second meaning of checkmate is a position in the game of Chess. This is a position when you have your opponent trapped no matter what move they do. They cannot win so they must resign and lose the game. Ironically, it is not the moths who are in the position of checkmate, but rather the citizens of Monterey, Marina, Pacific Grove, Sand City and Seaside (cities near Carmel and the famous Pebble Beach Golf course). These citizens must literally run, and escape, for the sake of their children from their own homes because a toxic cloud of government corruption is about to rain down upon them. It is these citizens who are in the position of checkmate. The difference here is that losing can mean a chronic disease, illness, and perhaps worse.

What you can do is call your state and federal representatives and encourage them to push through laws that prohibit aerial spraying. Encourage California State Senators and Federal Representatives to engage in a criminal investigation because poisoning people, children, and the elderly is a crime. Just because the people engaged in this work for the government, it doesn’t make them immune to our laws. Support 1hope.org, and the City of Santa Cruz, to fight back.

Tell everyone!

Spread this news. Let’s tell the whole world the truth about civil rights in the good ole’ US of A.

If enough people know, this cause will be greatly advanced. Also, process your feelings about this, the anger, the rage, the terror, and the hatred it brings up. Feel how you want to protect those in the aerial spray path, that inner voice speaking within you saying, “NO! this is wrong, it must stop”.

May the criminals face the real consequences of their crimes and be brought to justice. And may the people of Northern California be protected from untested synthetic chemicals forced upon them.

OUR CHRISTIAN ARMY

Building God’s (Christian) Army

By Jane Lampman, Christian Science Monitor
Posted on October 19, 2007, Printed on October 19, 2007
http://www.alternet.org/story/65597/

At Speicher base in Iraq, U.S. Army Spec. Jeremy Hall got permission from a chaplain in August to post fliers announcing a meeting for atheists and other nonbelievers. When the group gathered, Specialist Hall alleges, his Army major supervisor disrupted the meeting and threatened to retaliate against him, including blocking his reenlistment in the Army.

Months earlier, Hall charges, he had been publicly berated by a staff sergeant for not agreeing to join in a Thanksgiving Day prayer.

On Sept. 17, the soldier and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) filed suit against Army Maj. Freddy Welborn and US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, charging violations of Hall’s constitutional rights, including being forced to submit to a religious test to qualify as a soldier.

The MRFF plans more lawsuits in coming weeks, says Michael “Mikey” Weinstein, who founded the military watchdog group in 2005. The aim is “to show there is a pattern and practice of constitutionally impermissible promotions of religious beliefs within the Department of Defense.”

For Mr. Weinstein — a former Air Force judge advocate and assistant counsel in the Reagan White House — more is involved than isolated cases of discrimination. He charges that several incidents in recent years — and more than 5,000 complaints his group has received from active-duty and retired military personnel — point to a growing willingness inside the military to support a particular brand of Christianity and to permit improper evangelizing in the ranks. More than 95 percent of those complaints come from other Christians, he says.

Others agree on the need for the watchdog group, but question the conspiratorial view and some of its tactics. They say dealing with religious issues is a complex matter, and the military is trying to address them appropriately.

At the Defense Department, spokeswoman Cynthia Smith says the DOD doesn’t comment on litigation, but “places a high value on the rights of members of the Armed Forces to observe the tenets of their respective religions.”

Since the Revolutionary War, the armed services have tried to ensure that soldiers can practice their faiths, and that chaplains serve not only those of their own sect but all who may need pastoral care. The services have also sought to adhere to the First Amendment prohibition of any government “establishment of religion.”

In the 1990s, for instance, the Air Force’s Little Blue Book of core values highlighted religious tolerance, emphasizing that military professionals “must not take it upon themselves to change or coercively influence the religious views of subordinates.”

Weinstein insists, however, that there are improper actions at high levels that not only infringe on soldiers’ rights but, at a very dangerous time, also send the wrong message to people in the Middle East that those in the US military see themselves engaged in Christian warfare.

For example, he says, Lt. Gen. William Boykin, who gave speeches at churches while in uniform that disparaged Islam and defined the war on terror in fundamentalist, “end times” terms, was not fired but promoted. (Speaking of a Muslim warlord he had pursued, Lt. Gen. Boykin said, “I knew my God was a real God and his was an idol.” And our enemies “will only be defeated if we come against them in the name of Jesus.”)

“There’s an eschatologically obsessed version of Christianity that … is trying to make American foreign and domestic policy conterminous with their biblical worldview,” Weinstein charges. And “there’s improper pressure within the military command structure to make members join them.”

The most serious allegations from the field cannot be corroborated for this article. A few will be raised in the lawsuits, but some incidents have been documented.

Perhaps the most visible situation — and the one that set Weinstein off on his mission — involved the evangelizing of cadets on the part of some faculty and staff at the Air Force Academy (AFA) in Colorado Springs, Colo., which came to light in 2004. Congress held hearings, DOD conducted an investigation, and the head of the academy acknowledged significant problems. Weinstein’s cadet son experienced the pressures as a Jew.

Col. David Antoon (ret.), another alumnus of the AFA and now a 747 commercial pilot, says his heart was broken when he took his son, Ryan, to an orientation at the academy in the spring of 2004. An overt evangelistic approach during part of the orientation so upset them, he says, that they decided his son would reject the treasured appointment and instead go to Ohio State University.

“My son had dreamed of doing what I had done, but it was no longer the institution I went to,” Colonel Antoon says, his voice cracking with emotion.

The Air Force set about reaffirming basic principles in religion guidelines, as a basis for widespread training, but a pushback by Evangelicals later led to Congress setting them aside until hearings could be held. The hearings have not taken place.

In 2006, MRFF learned of a video produced by Christian Embassy, a group that conducts Bible studies at the Pentagon and seeks to evangelize within the armed services. Aimed at fundraising for the group, the video was improperly taped in the Pentagon and involved endorsements by Army and Air Force generals in uniform.

MRFF’s public alert spurred a DOD investigation. In a report critical of the senior officers, the Inspector General said they gave the appearance of speaking for the military. One general defended his role by saying “Christian Embassy had become a quasi-federal entity.”

The report noted that Maj. Gen. Paul Sutton participated while he served as chief of the US Office of Defense Cooperation in Turkey, a largely Muslim nation whose military takes pride in protecting the country’s secular status. After a Turkish newspaper wrote about the video as promoting a “fundamentalist sect,” General Sutton was called in and questioned by members of the Turkish General Staff.

“They had to give him a lesson in the separation of church and state,” Weinstein says. “Imagine the propaganda bonanza! And how this upset Muslims.”

The DOD report on the video recommended “appropriate corrective action” be taken against the officers. According to Army spokesman Paul Boyce, “The Army has not yet completed any planned actions associated with the Christian Embassy review.”

MRFF claims a victory in the case of the evangelical group Operation Stand Up. Earlier this year, OSU was preparing to send “freedom packages” to soldiers in Iraq as part of an Army program. Along with socks and snacks, the packages included proselytizing materials in English and Arabic, and the apocalyptic video game, “Left Behind: Eternal Forces.” In it, Christians carry on warfare against people of other faiths.

After the plans were made public, the Pentagon announced in August that the materials would not be mailed. OSU did not respond to a request for comment.

Weinstein — an intense, voluble attorney who prizes blunt, no-holds-barred language — has struck more than one nerve with his bird-dogging. He says numerous threats have been made on his life. Last week, the front window of his house was shot out for the second time. After the lawsuit was filed, talk of “fragging” (killing) Specialist Hall surfaced on some military blogs. The Army is investigating.

Others sympathetic to Weinstein’s concerns say some tactics undermine his efforts, and they question aims.

“He’s uncovered some very disturbing stuff that shouldn’t be going on in the armed forces,” says Marc Stern, a religious liberty expert at American Jewish Congress. “But it’s important that you not go too far.” Mr. Stern disagrees, for instance, with Weinstein’s stance on the Air Force guidelines, such as preventing military supervisors from ever speaking of religion to people under their command.

“He did a disservice to his and our cause by taking a position beyond what the law requires, and in fact may intrude on people’s rights,” Stern adds.

Several conservative Christian ministries publicly proclaim an evangelistic aim “to transform the nations of the world through the militaries of the world,” and they are active at US military installations in many countries. (See www.militaryministry.org or militarymissionsnetwork.org.)

MRFF sees that as a harbinger of a volunteer military falling under the sway of increasing numbers of Christian soldiers. Others see a military leadership, with the exception of a few generals here or there, well aware of its constitutional responsibilities, but challenged by the demands of training on these issues in a military of millions. A group such as MRFF can provide a crucial service, they say, if it is willing to work with the military.

Right now, Weinstein is counting on a set of lawsuits to bring serious issues to the fore. The question is whether those suits will go beyond individual cases of discrimination to prove an unconstitutional pattern within the armed forces.

Chicago says NO FREE NEWSPAPERS

Chicago City Hall Bans Distribution of Free Newspapers

From Inside Publications, October 5, 2007
By Ronald Roenigk

Beware — reading this newspaper may make you a partner to a crime!

Bizarre as it may seem, on Feb. 7, 2007, the City Council voted 50-0 to outlaw the distribution of free newspapers, periodicals, and directories inside the city limits. Better call 311 to get the phone number for your alderman if you’d like to complain about this because using a White or Yellow Pages phone book that was delivered to your door recently may also make you a partner to a crime.

According to Title 10, Chapter 8 of the Municipal Code, as amended in February, an effort by Chicago’s city fathers to control litter has now made it unlawful to distribute free “newspapers, periodicals and directories of any kind on any public way or other public place or on the premise of private property in the city in such a manner that it is reasonably foreseeable that such distribution will cause litter.”

The legislation also outlaws leaving “unsecured bundles” of papers in both public and private property. This is precisely how many of Chicago’s community, alternative, and ethnic newspapers are currently delivered. Both Inside and Inside Lincoln Park use a mix of free home delivery with commercial and residential distribution drops of unsecured bundles of newspaper.

This leaves open the question of which newspapers could or would be considered “litter.” If a future issue of Hoy, a Spanish language newspaper owned by the Tribune Company that is delivered for free throughout much of the 1st Ward, endorses an opponent of Ald. Manny Flores (1st) for alderman in a future election, could it be considered “litter” by the incumbent? He was the lead sponsor of this legislation, along with Ald. Virginia Rugai (19th).

Inside Publications talked to several other aldermen including Ald. Vi Daley (43rd) last week after discovering this legislation, but those conversations were off the record. This week we called back to speak on the record. Ald. Daley assured Inside that the amended legislation was aimed at the litter created by the distribution of fliers, coupons, and menus — not newspapers — and that she didn’t see a need to use this law to limit Inside Publications’ distribution in the 43rd Ward.

“This has become an issue of education — letting people know that it is wrong to dump unsolicited fliers in our community,” said Ald. Flores on Tuesday. “We’re trying to avoid the scenario where there is unsupervised distribution that is open to the elements.”
Indeed, most of the seven pages in the amended law deals with regulating the distribution of fliers door-to-door… except for one pesky paragraph: Section 10-8-272 that regulates “Distribution of Newspapers, Periodicals and Directories.”

Ald. Flores says he is the source of the expanded citywide ban. He claims the expanded legislation was his response to his constituents’ complaints over litter created by the distribution of “some newspapers, phone books, menus, fliers, and coupons” in his ward. Previously hand billing had been outlawed in only a few North Side wards including the 33rd, 43rd, 44th, and 47th wards.

Chicago’s legislation was modeled after similar legislation passed in Old Westbury Village, NY, Derby County, CN, Rosewell, NM, Patterson Township, PA, and Statford, VA. The Virginia case was challenged by local campaign workers on the basis of First Amendment free speech rights and overturned. Chicago’s legislation does not regulate political material, only commercial materials, in deference to the Virginia case. “There has to be a balance between people’s [First Amendment] rights and the additional cost to the city to clean this up,” said Flores.
A close reading of this law shows that this legislation “shall apply only to commercial advertising matter.” Therefore anything that a politician, preacher, or community activist delivers to your door cannot be considered “litter.”

It appears there was little debate or advance notice city-wide of the proposed legislation before the City Council determined that it is illegal to deliver circulars that others may consider litter. One North Side circulation company that wishes to remain anonymous said they were not made aware of the new legislation until one of their clients told them of it. And until recently there seemed to be little enforcement of the law, although two distribution companies told Inside Publications that they had recently been asked to stop delivery of their clients’ menus by ward superintendents in two Northwest Side wards.

A quick walk through Lincoln Park and Lake View Tuesday found that it’s business as usual for flier distribution. Inside found fliers attached to doors and gates on many main and side streets. They were advertising Jaime’s Brothers Decorating, Ciber Technology Learning Centers, RCN, Fortune Painting Company, Calo’s Restaurant, Panino’s Pizza, Pat’s Pizza, Fancy Paws, Sinbad’s Juice Bar, P.S. Bangkok Restaurant, Mr. Handyman, Concordia Lutheran Church School, and two businesses that were really tempting fate — Duck Walk, 919 W. Belmont Ave., that had placed a menu on the door of Ald. Daley’s 43rd Ward office on Wrightwood Ave.; and People Restaurant, 1560 N. Milwaukee Ave., that was placing menus on car windows, an act that has been illegal for years.

Inside Publications has reached out to other Chicago-area publishers to alert them to the new laws regarding distribution. Inside has also contacted the ACLU, the Illinois Press Association, the Cook County Suburban Publishers Association, the Independent Free Papers of America, and the National Association of Neighborhood Independents for help. We promise to do our best to keep you, the readers of Chicago’s free neighborhood, alternative, and ethnic newspapers, from committing a crime by picking up a free newspaper.
