Expect Delayed Results In Sacramento County  –
‘Inconsistencies’ During Testing Blamed

http://www.kcra.com/politics/15220517/detail.html

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A delay in Super Tuesday voting results is expected in Sacramento County because “inconsistencies” in tabulation machines will force all ballots to be counted at the registrar’s office instead of at individual polling places, an election official said.

The county’s results will likely not be known until early Wednesday.

But Brad Buyse, spokesman for the registrar’s office, emphasized that voters’ ballots will indeed count.

“Just trust that your vote will be counted accurately,” Buyse said early Tuesday.

The numbers you report in “Where Paper Prevailed, Different Results” (1/9/08) certainly merit further investigation. The next step would be to get standard deviations and do a simple difference of means test. This would tell the probability that these results could have occurred by chance. –CLG reader Brian D’Agostino, Ph.D., New York, NY

The difference between results from hand-counting and machine-counting do not necessarily signify that the machine-counting is wrong. Other factors may be involved. For example, voting machines may have been used in working-class, more traditional Democratic neighborhoods. There may not be a causal connection between machine-counted ballots and differing totals. One cannot assume that machines are necessarily wrong while hand-counting is necessarily right. —Michael Rectenwald

Recount in New Hampshire? MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann mentions Citizens For Legitimate Government in Re-Count? on ‘Countdown’ Friday 11 Jan 2008 (video) It looks like there’s an excellent chance of a recount in the New Hampshire Democratic primary…The issue is — as it was in 2004 — as it was in 2000 — as for all we know, it will be in November — electronic voting machines. The explanation for New Hampshire may be much more prosaic…But what about November? [See: Where Paper Prevailed, Different Results By Lori Price 09 Jan 2008.]

New Hampshire to Recount Ballots in Light of Controversy By Kim Zetter 11 Jan 2008 Both Republican and Democratic candidates have asked the state of New Hampshire to conduct a hand recount of all primary ballots statewide, citing internet rumors about vote discrepancies and voting machine fraud in the primary results. Democratic presidential nominee candidate Kucinich was the first to make headlines in calling for a statewide recount of the Democratic primary results in response to the internet fury around a post made by a woman named Lori Price that someone made online that compares votes counted by optical scan machines made by Diebold Election Systems (now re-named Premier Election Solutions) to votes counted by hand. [Thanks to the reader below who wrote in to say that Price didn’t create the site where the results appear.]

Candidates Push for a N.H. Recount 11 Jan 2008 Could New Hampshire be headed for Florida redux? Just three days after Tuesday’s primary election, the New Hampshire Secretary of State’s office says it will conduct a hand recount of the votes in both the Republican and Democratic primaries starting next Wednesday after receiving formal requests from two candidates this week.
